Activities and wildlife viewing
Naturally, the top draw for any visitor to Jack Hanna’s cottages is the mountain gorillas at home in adjacent Virunga National Park.
The House is located very near the park headquarters and starting point for gorilla treks, making it both a convenient as well as distinctive accommodation choice for gorilla safaris.
Visitors should be prepared for a possibly arduous hike through the forest as trackers locate a habituated gorilla group, though any physical exertion is soon dispelled as the group spends up to one hour in the close presence of the gorillas.
Other activities in the area include treks to see golden monkeys, and a visit to Dian Fossey remote Karisoke Camp, the original research base where Fossey studied the mountain gorillas, bringing their plight to the wider world.
Several of Fossey favourite gorillas are buried here, as well as Fossey herself, who was killed, likely by poachers, in 1985.
